Drums become a lead instrument at that point. That was the last time. And I only bring that up to tell you that, at some level, every one of those tracks are like a painting in a gallery to me, and theyre precious to me. And Journey was on tour, so I said Fine, Ill do that. And so I went down and sat with this mastering engineer. Listening to what he was doing, and listening to what we were doingit was like A to Z. I was goin, How are we gonna morph this together and make it work?. So at the end of that conversation, I said Look, you go call whatever you wanna do with whomever youve checked out something else. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. I look at it like this: as long as the solo went down, well-that's fine. I work hard the first day, then take one day off; then sort of a lighter workout on the middle day, with a day off; and then tough on the third day, with two days off afterward. Then I listened to Billy Cobham on the Spectrum album, and I like what he was doing. It can make you just live your life in a state of insecurity and fear. I'd like to sit at home and work on that sort of stuff. No, I didnt. Way after that. I didnt want to leave the group, for Christs sake! But the reason I do that is so I can listen back to all the things I played and pick out the parts that worked and sounded good. I had no desire to. I like doing that sort of thing because I've got the technique to play it. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me. I mean, this last year, I had a whole year off, and I kinda went buggy. I think its up to almost 50 million, now. By the time you damp a larger drum, you'll end up with a 20" head anyway. . While I was doing that, David Bowie called and invited me to one of his gigs. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. And that I was still able just to play and have at least half of myself there. We were all sitting in a room and Frank said, "Whoever comes through that door next will play bass in the movie," and Martin [Lickert] walked in. **. RM: Didn't you use Ludwigs with the Mothers? AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. I look at people like BB King and I go, man, God bless em. This first album from the group would prove the most successful of the four issued under the Retaliation banner, entering at least one of the charts that existed at the time. The Waka/Jawakaalbum was an interesting session, just because it was completely off the wall ad-lib. Id gotten back in touch with parts of the life I had before I was successful. I would have neverI would have never thought that was gonna happen. And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? It starts way in the back, over a railing, and it rolls up to the front. Like, Gee whiz, you have a Lamborghini, so you mustve been big. I didnt understand that. And the pressure of walking in front of an audience every night, and wanting to be what you know they want you to be, and what you want to be for them, and to have this silly little thing in your throat thats about as neurotic as you are, is difficult. They were really an amazing performing band. Blues and progressive stuff was where I was at, yknow? _[laughs] _Okay? At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. AD: I like the albums I've done with the Starship, of course. **Do you think thats why the press didnt like you? When he was touring behind his solo record? I was in Hawaii. He's on the "A Hard Road" album, along with Peter Green. That doesnt feel too great to me. Even though the piece I was writing was mostly going to be about Arnel Pineda (whose pre-Journey work can be seen here) and the present-day incarnation of the band, I knew I couldnt write anything about Journey without getting in touch with Steve Perry. She was dying during the writing and recording of that record, and in the middle of doing vocals, she died. Theyre all magical to me. The Melody Maker called it An exceptional debut in it s enthusiastic review at the time. During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. We have children together, which are the songs we wrote together, and we have a vested interest, as songwriters, in where they go and where they dont go. And people didnt understand what that meant. On the third Journey album, I started using double bass drums. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. Two summers ago I was asked by Sony to oversee the remastering of the entire catalog. Are you unhappy that the other guys in the band are still out there performing this music? Every guy in the band would take about a 1O-chorus solo on each tune. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. Can you unpack that for me a little bit? "I led his band in the end, that's what happened. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. I could go out and I could have eight, nine, ten vodkas, and then I wouldnt drink for another three or four days. I'm 22, 23 years-old and I like to play up high, and he suggested to . And I just couldnt do it anymore. The movie Monster, that Patty Jenkins wrote and directed, with Charlize Theron, was an amazing use of [Dont Stop Believin ]. And we did that for about five years, that grueling schedule. So Herbie got his tape, and he played it for us, and he goes, This is your new singer. _[laughs] _And were all looking at each other going, Really. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. Bye," I left London and went to San Francisco to check out Journey, because they had been calling me up ever since l had been with Bowie. When I met you guys in Vegas, you referred to Steve as He Who Cannot Be Named. Is there some legal issue here? **. I'm definitely thinking about doing it, but I want to have a plan of approach. Every time I saw him he was more spaced out and blank. And after we compiled enough material to go in and cut our first record Infinity, we all listened to it and went, Wow, theres something here. And the label was freakin out, they were lovin it. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." I told him l never sign contracts that are one-sided. You can play as much as you want when it comes to solos, but when you're playing behind vocals, you don't want to be scratching around all over the place. Actually Jonathan Cain tried to go down and go in and see him in San Francisco and they wouldnt let him in the building! I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. The idea of playing tunes on drums is beyond most people. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. The more you play, the less they hear. They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. Hearing the music rather than counting it is always the best way. I'll just leave it awhile and see what else develops, and then I'll get something. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. Cant you just, yknownot do that? And, he asked me again: We wanna know when youre going to surgery. RM: How much musical freedom does Zappa give his band? A lot of times, that goes down a lot better than sitting there being a technician. I used a small, jazz Ludwig kit for the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka aibums-a little 20" bass, an 8 x 12 tom-tom, and a pair of 14 x 14 floor toms. Career. At first, I was scared about really doing it, because I thought, "What would it be like to be muscle-bound and go on stage? I said, Im gonna get it done. Well, it felt great to be free. And I just dont think theyre for selling dogs and burgers. But if you don't have a name, then you'll always be "the Starship's drummer." Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. Cause I thought it was silly. Cause hes brilliant. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. And if I am around people that are messed up, you wont see me there too long, cause it reminds me too much of what I probably looked like. I mean, gee whiz. And I ran out of the coffee shop and said, I gotta get in on this. [laughs] She looked up, her eyes got like saucers. And the legacy continues, with Arnel. It was really great. The label said, We think you need a frontman. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. AD: I never had any problem. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. I was a Journeyman. "There is a place in hell reserved for women who don't support other women," she said in a new interview. That, to me, is completely amazing. With the smaller drum, I can get a more solid, compact sound, which is better for the audience out front to hear. It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. But some- times I can just close my eyes and let him ride out awhile. Which was my original motivation, back in the early 70s. Youre just responding to a question I asked. I still am, somewhat. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. You were able to function, so you never really addressed any of that stuff.
