Thanks to a return to cold temps and snowy weather, trib flows retreated for the beginning part of this week. Its been a windy week on Lake Ontario off the Orleans County NYCoastline. That could push more fish into the river plume and into the channel. The rest of the Oak, like after the confluence, were high water fishable by at least this past Sunday thru about yesterday as the overflow levels diminished. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Savvy trib anglers anticipate good hook-up chances on the backside of high flows when reasonable weather and water conditions coincide! Divers: Seneca Special with the Atomic big fin glow behind it (a standard he runs this time of year). If theres significant rain ahead of or instead of the ice/snow, then trib flows could be on the rise and going off color. Theres no obvious movement of fish around the Oak rivermouth either, although there has been a few Kings caught there by the casting foot soldiers. Looks like, just today, guys are paying more attention to the gravel spawning spots so they are finding those spread-out fish that were somewhat cloaked in the previous higher water. The fishing this last week has been better than the previous couple weeks. Fishing pressure most days pretty agreeable with salmon anglers falling out of the mix now and only mod numbers of guys pursuing brown trout so far. Everything is wide open to fish and its going to take a cold snap to get things iced back up again. To the east look for a quicker turn for lower and clearer flows and doable drifts then to the west. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. Some persistent casting in the low light or at night periods should provide chances for hard strikes and good fights. We did not take one fish on flasher/fly. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. Now some silver browns hooked up too, as has been the case on the smaller tribs like to the east. Flows in the Oak are already on the rise today thanks to increasing overflow water. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions especially in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. We took a look at flows and found the same medium-ish or slightly high that its been and some stain, but maybe not as dirty as reported a few days ago. As quickly as flows were restored in the Oak over the past weekend the fishing likewise perked up again with some steelhead hooked and a few knarly Kings clinging to a hopeful life. One angler for the beginning part of this week reported good action. 10 colors of FishUSA Stealthcore and A-TOM-MIK coppers in 150 & 200 took fish. Shouldnt be any serious icing in yet but there could be some bank ice or chunky flows. Flows in the Oak are moderate and mostly clear. Aiden also won the Youth Division with that salmon. Otherwise its a little tough to report on average fishing conditions. A big precipitation event that blows out the waterways with a resultant drop down to fishable conditions could be just what we need to kick off spring steelhead action. Good drifts on lighter leads are still scoring some hook ups on some dark and slightly silver fish. If the forecast is realized with any significant rain, then flows all around could be back on the rise and going off color. Will you be there when a chromer moves upstream? There was some water level fluctuations yesterday thanks to hydropower operations and when the water was down briefly a fair amount of fish were seen in the upstream areas. As the cooler weather continues, expect to see a large influx of both steelhead and brown trout moving up stream to feed on the remaining salmon eggs. The other area smaller tribs should be going from mod/med flows to slightly stained med/slightly high flows. For best chances at steelhead action later this winter and spring we might hope for some more colder and typical winter weather for the in between later Dec/early Jan timeframe. Cormorant numbers, however, remain a significant challenge to all the Lake wide salmonid stocking efforts. The other area smaller tribs have medium+ and slightly stained flows. This Jan timeframe is historically a bit of an in-between time frame so any action is a bonus after the fall runs and before later winter/early spring steelhead. First timers from Texas, Shawn and Heather had a good morning on Lake Ontario today! The steelhead and coho salmon were both caught on spoons straight out from the Oak Orchard River. In shore warm water but it didnt stop hard strikes at dawn not much left in the fight afterwards. King salmon are scheduled for release today, that effort under the directive of the local charter community. Moonshine Carbon 14 was our best today on a 70 rigger, and green Bam!! held this past weekend. The nuances of fish migrations is an inexact science and we cannot predict the future. The longer range forecast looks like back to colder for rest of next week. Either way, flows consist of a strong head of turbine water that could be close to full bore. It wont break the drought conditions but it may just perk up the action in the area smaller tribs. Look for flows all around to continue to drop and clear and we might begin to see some icing at least in the smaller waterways. Tough time of the year for any serious drying out since everything will wind up essentially as runoff. Less noticeable will be in Sandy since Canal flows there are throttling up. Any future precipitation could raise flows and bring back dirty water color. Mixed bag chances for lakers, browns, steelhead in the River or on the Niagara bar rivermouth. A nice spate of water which is hanging on in the Oak and retreating in the other area smaller tribs back to the base Canal feed. For now in the near term low and clear flows are not in the cards. Warm-ish temps around 40 F for the end of weekend and begin part of next week. Lots of water cover has probably spread out the fish. The Oak Orchard Harbor is in the process of being dredged which started last week (8/25) and is expected to finished mid September. So with light angling pressure in the Oak, a few drop backs, spawners and fresh fish have been encountered in the low and clear flows. Out of winter hibernation just to keep the pinners honest a med fresh pretty steelhead comes to the dead drift. For now these are the lowest flows of the whole fall season and are more typical of average fall flows. More of the up and down temps that weve been experiencing so far this winter. Flows in the Oak down just a touch, maybe some of that love from Canal water being shared with Johnson Creek is responsible for that. I have been fishing my clients from 50-150 ft. No doubt there are some guys out quietly getting into some browns and steelhead in the smaller tribs.
